October 11, 2024 - Scenic Sailing - Friday

October 11, 2024 – Friday                            Day 16 of this journey

St Lawrence Seaway

This is considered a “sea day”, even though we are in a river and not at sea. We have seven locks to go through before arriving at Trois Riviere tomorrow.

Since we are in the St Lawrence River, both sides of the ship have great views. Our first lock is a minor adjustment. Trying to research a little more about that lock did not turn up any more information.

It will take us all day to get through these seven locks. The last one being near midnight and in the vicinity of Montreal.

As it turned out, during the night, we ran into some traffic in the locks which slowed us down. We also experienced some wind - 50 knots. That was certainly enough to blow us around. And, we had this kind of wind for the last 3 of the locks. They will definitely get the white paint out.

The two Expedition ships that Viking had made were designed specifically to handle both polar regions and the Great Lakes and the locks in the Great Lakes. The ships are no more than 2 feet narrower than the locks. After each lock (or set of them), crews were out with buckets of white paint repairing the scrapes along the sides. A crew member said "Don't worry, we have LOTS of white paint!"

Although any lock is interesting, most are pretty similar, and not necessarily photo worthy.
